On Monday, the Houston Texans will hire Lovie Smith as their new head coach. Lovie Smith was the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the Houston Texans last season.
Houston Texans fired former coach David Culley in mid-January. Lovie Smith previously coached the Chicago Bears (2004-2012) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2014-2015). He then spent five years as head coach at the University of Illinois before being fired to join the Houston Texans.
Since Lovie Smith hasn’t been with the Houston Texans for at least two years and hasn’t left as head coach, the Houston Texans won’t be rewarded with two third-round picks like the San Francisco 49ers did.
General manager Nick Caserio said: “I think Lovie Smith is a great coach who has done a lot for our program and system and the players have a lot of confidence in him.”
Other Houston Texans head coaching candidates include former NFL quarterback Josh McCown, Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell, Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, Brian Flores, and Hines Ward.
